Persevere

When entrepreneurs are faced with demoralizing challenges and failed expectations, experts recommend they keep an optimistic attitude, use affirmations, practice positive thinking, reflect on motivational quotes, and any number of other methods to help you persevere.

But this all took a turn for me when, during a workshop, one CEO asked a funny question: “Why is perseverance a virtue? Why can’t ‘giving up’ be a virtue?”

Sardonic, but something about it got my attention.

All success stories show how entrepreneurs persevered, but when I did autopsies on dead companies, something emerged that I’d never seen published:

A lot of dead companies persevered . . . but far too long.

Perseverance doesn’t work all the time. Many dead companies persevered and stuck to their plans long after they should have given up.

But why didn’t they give up?

Perception.

Keeping old perceptions alive causes death by perseverance.

Persevere if you want, but if you’re unable to perceive situations differently, stupid things happen. You keep thinking you’re right, believing your way is the best, or thinking you know everything. Fix this problem or you’re on your way to becoming an idiot.
